What do you wear when you are a bride of 51 asked the Daily Mail? There is certainly a gap in the bridal market as it overwhelmingly caters for the younger bride, but some of us brides are even older. My fiancé and I were married very recently on the West Coast of Scotland in a tiny church. We told our families a few days before we 'eloped'. I am 69 and my new husband is 72, and he looked charming in his kilt. We had a beautiful, short service exchanging traditional vows, with a piper playing Danny Boy as we entered the church. The piper was one of our witnesses, the other was a professional photographer.
It was difficult to find a suitable outfit and very embarrassing to go into wedding boutiques, which seem to cater only for the younger generation. I ended up buying exactly what I wanted - without the excessive cost - by trawling the internet. I knew we would have photographs on the beach with just the two of us, so the outfit had to be appropriate. It was a simple dress and with it I wore a lace and jewelled shrug.
My hair was put up with a tiara and floor-length lightweight viel adorned with antique-style lace ( I took the veil off when we went to the beach). I wore designer shoes, which again I was able to find on the internet at a fraction of the normal price.
We both had nerves before the ceremony, and it was very emotional. We spent a few days in the Highlands and then went to Carfest North in Cheshire for a weekend's camping. What an amazing week we have had.
